Family formals

Family formals are a huge part of the wedding day timeline. Planning ahead and knowing what different groupings of pictures you want, is key to ensuring family formals run smoothly.

As mentioned in the Wedding Day Timeline Planning, it is recommended that any unique family portraits should be taken during cocktail hour or the reception.

how long do i need to plan for family formals?

The recommended time frame for family formals is 15-30 minutes. Typically 15 minutes is enough time, but I like to allow a time buffer.

Tip: The men can either have their hand in their pockets or on the bride’s arm . The top button of their jacket should ALWAYS be buttoned.

When are family photos taken?

They are typically done right after the ceremony. If a recession line is not part of your plan, you can immediately jump into family photos. If a recession line is part of your plan, you can have your family wait at the photo location. Many couples choose their ceremony location for their family photos because it’s easiest to gather everyone there.

If a First Look is part of your wedding day timeline, family photos can occur after your bridal party portraits.

Tip: Make sure to tell family members ahead of time a location and time to meet for family formals.
